Rayma Peterson, BSc. BEd., is an award winning artist who has shown her artwork internationally and is represented in many private and public collections, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She has created botanical drawings for interpretive signs at the Devonian Botanic Garden and the George Pegg Historic Garden. Besides teaching art to all age groups, including university, she has given professional development workshops for teachers and master gardeners. She recently completed writing and illustrating an Art 30 course for the Alberta Distance Learning Centre. Her artwork and articles have been published in Watercolor, Legacy, arts & activities, School Arts, Artichoke, and Wildflower magazines. With her degree in Botany, her specialty is painting watercolors of plants in their native habitats.
“Exploring and botanizing in the spring and summer are my favorite activities, looking for close-up scenes that almost jump out at me for their unique beauty. I try to share my visual experience of these scenes with the viewer, showing people the breathtaking beauty that is underfoot in western Canada. I take pains to ensure that the painting is botanically correct; that is, only showing plants growing together that would normally do so in a given habitat. I enjoy painting flowering plants, but also take pleasure in depicting their more humble relatives that may be easily overlooked, such as fungi, lichens, mosses, and algae. My favorite habitats are calcareous springs and fens, subalpine and alpine areas, wetlands, and tide pools.”
